Bengaluru: A customer allegedly stole a mobile phone worth ₹1.6 lakh from a showroom in Bengaluru after entering the store under the pretext of making an enquiry, according to a complaint filed by the showroom manager.

The incident reportedly took place at around 11.30 am on September 17, when the accused entered the showroom and approached the sales staff. He reportedly asked the employees about the location of a Vivo service centre.

According to the complaint, the customer was inside the showroom for some time before leaving. The staff later noticed that a high-value mobile phone was missing from the premises. They checked the showroom’s CCTV footage and allegedly found that the customer had taken the phone.

Customer asked staff about Vivo service centre

The incident began when the accused entered the showroom around 11.30 am on September 17, according to the showroom manager’s complaint.

Rather than immediately asking about a particular phone, the customer reportedly approached the sales staff and sought information about the location of a Vivo service centre. The enquiry apparently appeared routine at the time.

The customer was allowed to remain inside the showroom while the staff attended to him. It was only after he had left that the employees noticed that one of the expensive smartphones kept in the showroom was missing.

The showroom staff then checked the CCTV recordings to establish what had happened.

CCTV footage reveals alleged theft

The CCTV footage reportedly helped the showroom staff identify the suspected theft. On reviewing the recordings, they allegedly found that the customer had taken the ₹1.6 lakh phone from the showroom.

The discovery prompted the showroom manager to approach the police and file a complaint.

The CCTV footage is expected to be an important part of the investigation as police attempt to establish the sequence of events and identify the person allegedly involved in the incident.

The case also highlights the challenges faced by retail outlets dealing with high-value electronic devices, where customers can move through stores while staff members attend to multiple enquiries.

Showrooms remain vulnerable to opportunistic thefts

Mobile phone showrooms generally keep several expensive devices on display, making security and staff vigilance important. High-end smartphones can be worth more than a lakh each, increasing the potential loss from a single theft.

In this case, the alleged theft was reportedly detected only after the customer had left the premises. The subsequent review of CCTV footage helped the showroom staff understand how the phone went missing.

The complaint filed by the showroom manager provides the basis for the reported incident. Details about the identity of the accused, recovery of the phone and further police action would depend on the progress of the investigation.

Vivo itself provides authorised service-centre support across India, including assistance for customers seeking repair and service-related information.

Investigation expected to establish further details

The incident remains a matter for police investigation. At this stage, the available details establish that the showroom manager reported the disappearance of a ₹1.6 lakh phone and that CCTV footage was checked after staff noticed it was missing.

The alleged motive and whether the phone has been recovered are not clear from the details available so far.

Police would typically rely on CCTV footage, the complaint and other available evidence to establish the identity of the person allegedly involved and trace the missing device.

The case also serves as a reminder for retailers selling expensive electronic products to maintain close monitoring of display units and customer movement, particularly when multiple customers are present.
