As Diwali approaches, Bengaluru is alive with excitement and bustling firecracker shopping, just two days before the festival. A total of 456 stalls have been set up across the city, attracting crowds eager to purchase fireworks and celebrate the festival of lights. However, amidst the festivities, safety concerns have been raised by medical professionals.

Ophthalmologists at Minto Hospital have highlighted the importance of caution when bursting crackers, as the city typically experiences a rise in eye injuries during the Diwali celebrations. In preparation for this year’s festivities, Minto Hospital has equipped itself to handle firecracker-related injuries and will provide 24/7 services throughout the holiday period. They are fully prepared to address any accidents that may occur as revelers enjoy the celebrations.

To specifically cater to children, who are often at risk of sustaining injuries from firecrackers, Minto Hospital has established a dedicated ward. Emergency treatment preparations have also been implemented, ensuring a sufficient supply of medications and eye drops is available across all wards.

Statistics reveal a worrying trend: the number of firecracker injury cases admitted to hospitals has been rising each year. In light of this, Minto Hospital staff will remain on duty throughout the holiday, forgoing leave to ensure that prompt care is available for those injured by fireworks. The hospital has reserved beds specifically for treating firecracker-related injuries, including seven beds for men, seven for women, and separate beds for children. Additionally, eight emergency wards have been designated for quick response, with arrangements in place for emergency surgeries if necessary.

To assist the public further, Minto Hospital has established emergency helplines for firecracker-related accidents. In case of emergencies, individuals can reach out at 9481740137 or 08026707176. This initiative aims to ensure that help is readily available for those who may require immediate medical attention during the festive celebrations.

This year, the state government has also taken significant measures to prevent firecracker-related accidents. Authorities have issued strict guidelines to avoid fire incidents and mandated that firecracker stalls comply with safety regulations. Notably, only the sale of eco-friendly crackers has been permitted, reflecting a commitment to safety and environmental consciousness during the festive season.

As the festival of lights approaches, the combination of excitement and caution serves as a reminder for everyone to celebrate responsibly. By following safety guidelines and remaining vigilant, Bengaluru can enjoy a joyous Diwali while minimising the risks associated with firecracker use.
