The Karnataka government has accelerated plans for Bengaluru’s second international airport, shortlisting three potential sites and submitting the proposal to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation.

🔹 Proposed locations:

  • Ramanagara district (Kanakapura Road) – 4,800 acres
  • Harohalli (near Metro’s last Green Line station)
  • Nelamangala (Kunigal Road, Bangalore Urban) – 5,200 acres

The government has assured that at least 4,500 acres will be provided at the finalised location.

🔹 Why the urgency?

  • Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) is nearing capacity, expected to hit 100 million passengers by 2030.
  • The exclusivity clause for KIA expires in 2033, allowing competition.
  • Tamil Nadu’s fast-tracked Hosur airport project poses a risk of diverting passengers away from Bengaluru.

🔹 What’s next?

  • The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will inspect the sites before a final selection.
  • A financial feasibility study will follow.
  • All locations are within 50 km of Bengaluru, ensuring economic viability.

With a 7–8 year timeline, Karnataka is racing to secure its aviation future before losing ground to regional competitors.
