Bengaluru, once famous for its cool breeze and naturally pleasant weather, is witnessing a noticeable shift in climate patterns, with rising temperatures pushing many residents to consider air conditioners for the first time.
The latest trigger for online discussion came through a viral social media video showing an AC being installed inside a Bengaluru home, symbolising what many called a major change in the city’s lifestyle.
Viral video strikes a chord
The clip, posted by Bhargavi Jha, humorously read: “Dear Bangalore, I tolerated the traffic for your weather. This feels like a betrayal.”
The post quickly gained traction, with many users relating to the sentiment that Bengaluru’s once-comfortable summers no longer feel the same.
City’s famous climate changing
For decades, Bengaluru was known as India’s “air-conditioned city”, where even summer months were comparatively mild.
However, residents now report hotter afternoons, warmer nights and delayed rainfall over recent years. Fans that were once enough are increasingly being replaced by coolers and AC units in many homes.
Internet mixes humour with concern
While several users joked that buying an AC in Bengaluru “felt illegal”, others expressed genuine concern over the city’s environmental future.
Many commenters pointed to global warming, rapid urbanisation and loss of green cover as likely reasons behind the rising heat.
Shrinking greenery blamed
Residents noted that older neighbourhoods with mature trees and open spaces still feel cooler compared to newer concrete-heavy zones with dense apartment clusters.
Experts have often warned that disappearing lakes, fewer trees and expanding construction can worsen the urban heat island effect.
Bigger wake-up call
The viral video may have been humorous, but it reflects a deeper anxiety among citizens about preserving Bengaluru’s liveability and green identity
