Bengaluru: Bengaluru Metro commuters could soon get some relief from overcrowding as the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) has given the go-ahead for new Distance-To-Go (DTG) signalling-compatible trains for Namma Metro.

The move is expected to strengthen train availability on the city’s existing network, particularly the Purple and Green lines, which have witnessed heavy passenger demand during peak hours. The approval comes as Bengaluru’s Metro network continues to experience rising ridership and increasing pressure on its existing fleet.

The Railway Board had earlier sanctioned new six-coach train sets equipped with DTG signalling for the Purple and Green lines. The additional trains are expected to improve service frequency and increase carrying capacity on some of the city’s busiest corridors.

Why Bengaluru Metro needs more trains

Namma Metro has seen a substantial increase in passenger numbers as more parts of Bengaluru become connected by rail. The opening of new corridors and extensions has encouraged more commuters to shift from private vehicles and buses to the Metro.

However, the increase in demand has also resulted in crowded trains, particularly during morning and evening peak hours.

The Purple Line, which connects major residential, commercial and technology hubs, is among the busiest sections of the network. The Green Line also experiences significant passenger demand, particularly during peak periods.

Adding more train sets can help BMRCL operate services at shorter intervals, allowing more passengers to be carried without requiring major changes to the existing infrastructure.

What are DTG trains?

DTG stands for Distance-To-Go, a signalling system used to regulate train movement by continuously determining the distance between trains and their permitted movement limits.

Bengaluru Metro has traditionally used DTG signalling on parts of its network, while newer corridors are moving towards more advanced communications-based train control systems.

The new trains sanctioned for the existing network are compatible with the DTG system, allowing them to be integrated into the operational corridors without requiring the entire system to be converted to a different signalling technology.

Earlier reports said the Railway Board had approved new six-coach DTG train sets for the Purple and Green lines, with the objective of increasing capacity and easing overcrowding.

21 new trains planned for Bengaluru Metro

Bengaluru Metro is set to receive a significant addition to its fleet, with 21 new six-coach DTG train sets planned for the Green Line.

The additional trains are expected to help BMRCL increase the number of services and reduce waiting times during busy periods. Earlier reports indicated that the first of these trains could enter service around 2026, with the wider induction continuing into 2027.

The additional capacity is particularly important as passenger numbers continue to rise across the network.

More trains would allow BMRCL to distribute passengers across a larger number of services rather than relying on existing train sets to handle the growing demand.

Green Line expected to benefit

The Green Line is expected to be one of the major beneficiaries of the additional rolling stock.

The line has been extended towards the northern and southern parts of Bengaluru and connects several important residential and commercial areas. The extension towards Madavara has further increased the reach of the corridor.

Earlier reports indicated that three additional six-coach train sets were expected to be provided for the Green Line, with the increase in fleet strength aimed at improving peak-hour frequency.

The larger fleet could also provide BMRCL with greater operational flexibility. If one train requires maintenance or is temporarily unavailable, additional train sets can help maintain services without putting as much pressure on the remaining fleet.

Purple Line also faces heavy demand

The Purple Line has emerged as one of Bengaluru’s most important Metro corridors following its extension towards Whitefield and the completion of the full east-west connection.

The corridor links several major employment and residential areas, including the central business district and Bengaluru’s eastern IT corridor.

As a result, trains can become heavily crowded during peak commuting hours.

Increasing the number of trains is one way of addressing the problem without immediately requiring major infrastructure changes. A shorter interval between services can effectively increase the number of passengers transported every hour.

New trains could improve peak-hour frequency

For commuters, the biggest practical benefit of additional rolling stock could be a reduction in waiting time.

If more trains are introduced into regular operations, BMRCL can potentially operate services at shorter intervals during peak periods. This would increase the number of train trips available each hour.

It could also help distribute passengers more evenly between successive trains.

However, the actual improvement will depend on how many new trains are inducted, their deployment pattern and the operational capacity of individual corridors.

Simply adding trains does not automatically guarantee a dramatic reduction in crowding if passenger demand continues to rise rapidly.

Metro expansion is adding pressure

Bengaluru’s Metro network is expanding rapidly, with new corridors and extensions expected to bring more areas into the rapid-transit system.

The operational network currently spans around 96.10 km with 83 stations, according to figures reported from BMRCL’s annual report. The Yellow Line, which opened in August 2025, added another major north-south connection between RV Road and Bommasandra.

The upcoming Pink Line and Blue Line will further expand the system once their respective sections become operational.

While these projects will provide additional connectivity, they are also likely to increase demand on existing interchange stations and established corridors.

This makes fleet augmentation important alongside network expansion.

Pink Line could provide additional relief

Another major development for Bengaluru commuters is the expected opening of the first operational section of the Pink Line.

The 7.5-km Kalena Agrahara-Tavarekere stretch is targeting an opening in September 2026, although final safety and rolling stock clearances are still required. The new section is expected to provide an additional mass-transit option for commuters travelling along the busy Bannerghatta Road corridor.

Once more Metro corridors become operational, passenger demand could be distributed across different routes.

Until then, strengthening the fleet on existing lines remains an important part of managing overcrowding.

More trains are only part of the solution

The approval for additional DTG trains is a positive development for Bengaluru Metro users, but overcrowding is influenced by several factors.

Peak-hour demand is concentrated around major employment centres, interchange stations and residential corridors. Stations can also become congested when several trains arrive within a short period.

BMRCL will therefore need to balance train frequency, station capacity, signalling constraints and passenger movement.

Better last-mile connectivity can also encourage more commuters to use the Metro while reducing dependence on private vehicles.

What commuters can expect

The CMRS clearance removes an important regulatory hurdle for the introduction of the new trains. The next stages will involve their induction, testing and deployment into regular passenger operations.

For Bengaluru commuters, the eventual benefit will be measured in shorter waiting times, more frequent services and greater capacity during peak hours.

The new DTG trains are therefore an important step towards addressing overcrowding on Namma Metro’s existing network. With ridership continuing to grow and several new corridors under development, expanding the fleet will remain essential to ensuring that Metro services can keep pace with Bengaluru’s rapidly changing transport needs.
