The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has taken a big leap towards enhancing commuter convenience by introducing modern self-service ticket vending machines at Baiyappanahalli station. This upgrade replaces the old, cash-only systems with smart machines that allow passengers to buy QR code-based paper tickets using digital payments.
A BMRCL official, quoted by TOI, said, “This is part of our commitment to improve passenger ease. We’ve installed 10 machines on a pilot basis, and they are already being used actively. Expansion to more stations is in the pipeline.”
How the New Machines Work:
- Choose destination
- Select ticket quantity
- Pay via UPI or other digital options
- Collect QR code paper ticket instantly
These tickets are valid until the exit gate and should be disposed of in designated bins. Each one also includes date and time of travel. A caution is printed: do not fold or damage the ticket.
Earlier machines introduced in 2014 were discontinued due to poor upkeep, demonetisation, and low usage. BMRCL is confident the new system, better suited to today’s digital habits, will fare better.
Unlike app-based QR tickets that once came with discounts (ended in Feb 2025), these paper tickets are sold at regular token prices, offering convenience but no fare reduction.
This move reflects BMRCL’s shift toward cashless, tech-driven travel, aiming for quicker, more efficient passenger service.
