City police cracked two cases involving thieves who exploited common hiding spots for house keys, such as shoe racks and flower pots, to access locked homes without breaking in.
Case 1: Techie-Turned-Thief
- Accused: K Murthy, a former IT professional from Bommanahalli.
- Reason for Crime: Addicted to online gambling, Murthy resorted to theft after losing his earnings and quitting his job.
- Operations: Murthy dressed well and pretended to search for rental houses, stealing valuables from homes with hidden keys. He pledged stolen gold ornaments at gold loan firms.
- Recovery: Begur police recovered Rs 18.53 lakh worth of gold ornaments. Murthy is linked to eight theft cases across Begur and Surya City.
Case 2: Fruit Vendor-Turned-Thief
- Accused: Jayanthi, a 33-year-old mother of four from Hennur.
- Reason for Crime: Struggling to provide for her family, she turned to theft as a full-time activity.
- Operations: Using her fruit cart as a cover, she targeted locked houses in the East division, searching for hidden keys.
- Recovery: Hennur police retrieved 110gm of gold ornaments worth Rs 7.8 lakh. Jayanthi is wanted in 31 theft cases.
Police Advisory
To prevent such incidents, residents are urged to avoid leaving keys in obvious places like shoe racks or flower pots, which serve as an easy target for thieves.
