In a rapid response, Mangaluru CCB police apprehended two infamous gold chain snatchers within a day of their latest heists. The authorities recovered stolen gold jewelry and the motorbike used during the crimes.
The suspects, Habib Hassan (43) and Umar Shiyaf (29), had been targeting women in Mangaluru and Karkala. On December 6, they approached Sujina D’Souza, a cook in Naringana village, pretending to seek directions. While she was distracted, the duo barged in and grabbed her gold chain before fleeing on a motorcycle.
On December 9, the pair struck again in Karkala, snatching a gold chain from a pedestrian named Vasanthi under the same guise. Prompt investigations by the Konaje and Karkala Rural police stations identified the culprits.
Habib Hassan, a repeat offender with 39 cases in regions like Bantwal and Moodabidri, was recently released on bail days before the crimes. Umar Shiyaf had a criminal record involving an attempted murder case and thefts.
Police tracked the suspects through CCTV footage and intelligence inputs, eventually nabbing them at Car Street. Officers seized 17.43 grams of gold, a Hero Honda bike, and a knife used to resist arrest. The thieves had also stolen bikes to assist in their escapades.
Led by ACP Manoj Kumar Naik and a diligent CCB team, the operation ended the duo’s crime spree, solving multiple theft cases and ensuring community safety.
