Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Wednesday announced that a final deadline has been issued to contractors for repairing potholes across Bengaluru. The state government has directed that the city’s roads must be pothole-free by November, aiming to ensure cleaner and smoother traffic flow.
Final deadline for contractors
Shivakumar, who also holds the Bengaluru Development portfolio, said contractors engaged in road maintenance have been given strict instructions to complete all pending pothole-filling work before the set deadline. “We cannot compromise on public safety and mobility. The deadline is final, and action will be taken if work is delayed further,” he said.
Pothole problem in Bengaluru
The city has long struggled with potholes, especially during the monsoon season, when heavy rains worsen road conditions. Commuters and civic activists have frequently criticised the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for poor maintenance, blaming potholes for accidents and traffic congestion.
Accountability measures
The Deputy CM warned that contractors failing to meet the November target will face penalties and blacklisting. “We are holding contractors accountable. Taxpayers deserve better infrastructure, and we will not tolerate negligence,” Shivakumar added.
Push for smoother traffic flow
With Bengaluru already battling rising vehicle numbers and frequent traffic snarls, the government believes that fixing potholes will ease congestion and reduce accidents. The initiative is being closely monitored by the BBMP and the state’s Urban Development Department.
Conclusion
As the November deadline approaches, residents will be watching whether the government can deliver on its promise. The move marks yet another attempt by authorities to address one of the city’s most persistent urban challenges.
