A 33-year-old contract-based prison counsellor, Navyashree K M, was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle a Redmi mobile phone into the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, police said on Saturday. She was employed as a psychologist in the prison’s hospital section.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the incident took place last Friday. During a routine security check, guards from the Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF) used a handheld metal detector, which triggered an alert. A more detailed search followed, leading to the alleged discovery of the concealed phone hidden in her private parts.
Prison officials immediately turned her over to the Parappana Agrahara police, who registered a case under Section 323 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) — which pertains to dishonest or fraudulent concealment of property — along with relevant sections of the Karnataka Prisons Act.
A senior police officer revealed that the phone was intended for an undertrial prisoner, and that further investigation is underway to identify the source of the device, the intended recipient, and her possible relationship with the inmate. Authorities are also looking into whether this was an isolated incident or part of a broader smuggling operation involving the counsellor.
This arrest has raised serious concerns about internal security breaches within the prison system and the need for tighter screening of external personnel.
