Bengaluru: A ragpicker was chased and assaulted by the public on MG Road after being mistaken for a thief on Wednesday. According to police, three ragpickers from Ejipura were collecting waste when one of them pulled out a dagger and moved toward a closed shop. Seeing the weapon, passersby grew suspicious and confronted him. Panic-stricken, he attempted to flee, prompting the crowd to chase him for nearly 300 metres. He was eventually caught and beaten before being handed over to the police.

Authorities later clarified that the dagger was merely a tool used to cut materials ragpickers typically collect. “Since no crime was committed, we did not register a case. We provided them with food and water before letting them go,” a Cubbon Park police officer stated.
