A Reddit post comparing rental costs in Bengaluru and Faridabad has sparked fresh debate over the city’s soaring housing prices, with many users sharing similar experiences of high rents and steep security deposits after relocating to India’s technology hub.
The user, who recently moved to Bengaluru for work, said he expected the city to be more expensive than Faridabad but was still taken aback by the amount he had to spend before even moving into his new home.
High rent and hefty deposits
According to the post, the user previously rented a two-bedroom apartment in Faridabad for Rs 14,000 to Rs 16,000 per month in a residential society with amenities such as a swimming pool and gym.
After arriving in Bengaluru, he found that rents for similar 2 BHK apartments ranged between Rs 30,000 and Rs 45,000, with some localities, including HSR Layout, commanding even higher prices.
What surprised him even more was the security deposit. He said landlords demanded around Rs 1 lakh upfront, far higher than the one- to three-month deposit he was accustomed to paying in Faridabad.
The user wrote that a significant portion of his savings was spent before he had even furnished his new home.
Internet users weigh in
The post resonated with many Reddit users, who said Bengaluru’s rental market has remained expensive for years due to strong demand from the city’s large technology workforce.
Some users noted that compared to cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru’s rents still appear relatively affordable, while others pointed to supply constraints, infrastructure, water availability and employment opportunities as factors driving housing costs.
A few commenters also observed that comparing Bengaluru with Gurugram or Noida might offer a more balanced perspective than comparing it with Faridabad.
The discussion highlights the growing challenge of securing affordable housing in Bengaluru, where rising rental prices and large security deposits continue to be a concern for professionals relocating to the city
