Bengaluru: A city resident who spent his own money and time to repair a pothole in his neighbourhood was left disheartened after a water tanker allegedly drove over the freshly laid cement barely an hour after he finished the work.

The man shared his experience in a Reddit post titled “This city will never get better”, where he described how his Sunday attempt to fix his street ended in frustration.

“Decided to spend money from my own pocket to fix the potholes in my street. One hour after finishing the work, a tanker guy runs straight over the cement — even pushed aside the rocks I had placed to block the patch,” the user wrote.

When the resident confronted the driver, he reportedly justified his actions, saying, “If the road was better, I wouldn’t have gone over the cement,” and added that the work should have been done “at night” if the resident didn’t want vehicles passing over it.

“He had the audacity to say we should have laid the cement at night if we didn’t want it damaged… as if I did this just for myself and not for everyone,” the resident wrote.

Expressing his disappointment, he added, “Can’t do one nice thing for this place without someone trampling on my hard work and money. Disappointed that my Sunday got ruined like this.”

Social Media Reaction

The post struck a chord with many Reddit users, who sympathised with the resident’s frustration and praised his civic initiative.

One user wrote, “Fair warning, do not let fools dissuade you from a noble cause. There’s always going to be plenty of them.”

Another commented, “What you did is a hundred thousand times more effective than what the thinkers do. You’re an inspiration — your actions are the only hope.”

Others expressed similar sentiments:

  • “You did the right thing. The city has way too many idiots. Kudos to you for trying to do the right thing.”
  • “India has too many self-centred people. People need to change before talking about changing the government.”

The post has since gained wide traction on social media, reigniting conversations around citizen-led civic action and the everyday challenges faced by public-spirited residents in Bengaluru.
