Bengaluru: Commercial Street Police in east Bengaluru have arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly harassing, abusing and assaulting a car driver in a road rage incident that occurred in the busy Halasuru area. The incident, which was captured on video and later went viral on social media, took place on January 26 and triggered widespread public outrage over reckless driving and aggressive behaviour on city roads.

The arrested accused has been identified as Syed Sameer, a resident of Yarab Nagar in Banashankari. Police said Sameer was employed in menial jobs and was riding a two-wheeler at the time of the incident.

Incident occurred after signal jump in Halasuru

According to the police, the incident took place at around 1.30 pm near Halasuru Road Cross, a congested junction known for heavy vehicular movement. Sameer allegedly jumped a traffic signal on his two-wheeler and rode dangerously close to a car driven by Praveen MN, 43, a resident of Halasuru.

Concerned by the rider’s rash behaviour, Praveen asked Sameer to drive carefully. However, instead of slowing down, Sameer allegedly responded aggressively, saying, “It is my vehicle, my road, I will drive as I please.”

Argument escalated despite warning

Police said the situation escalated further when Praveen asked Sameer to repeat his words in front of the police. The accused allegedly retorted, “Who police? Why should I come? Who are you to ask?”

Praveen then chose to disengage and drove away to avoid further confrontation. However, Sameer allegedly followed the car for some distance, tailing it through traffic.

Car waylaid near Manipal Centre

According to the complaint filed by Praveen, Sameer caught up with his vehicle near Manipal Centre, a busy commercial hub in the city. There, the accused allegedly blocked the car, began abusing Praveen verbally and then physically assaulted him.

“He hit me with his hands and threatened me,” Praveen stated in his complaint to the police. The altercation caused a brief disruption to traffic in the area and drew the attention of bystanders.

Dash video goes viral on social media

Importantly, Praveen had recorded the entire exchange on his mobile phone. The video, which showed Sameer behaving aggressively and making provocative statements, was later shared on social media platforms.

The clip quickly went viral, with many users condemning the rider’s conduct and calling for strict action against road rage offenders. Several citizens also raised concerns about growing impatience, disregard for traffic rules and aggressive driving behaviour in Bengaluru.

Police action and arrest

Taking note of the viral video and the formal complaint, Commercial Street Police registered a case and traced the accused. Sameer was arrested soon after and questioned by the police.

A senior police officer said the accused admitted to his behaviour during questioning. “The video evidence clearly supported the complainant’s version of events. The accused was taken into custody and later produced before the court,” the officer said.

Police have booked Sameer under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to criminal intimidation, intentional insult and causing hurt.

Accused issues apology after arrest

Following his arrest, Sameer recorded an apology video, which was later released by the police. In the video, he expressed regret over his actions and appealed to the public to forgive him.

Police officials said the apology was not a substitute for legal consequences but noted that the accused had cooperated during the investigation.

Police warn against road rage incidents

Bengaluru Police have once again warned motorists against engaging in road rage, stressing that aggressive behaviour on roads will be dealt with strictly.

“Jumping signals, reckless driving and verbal or physical abuse will not be tolerated. Citizens are advised to remain calm and report such incidents rather than escalating conflicts,” an official said.

Conclusion

The arrest of Syed Sameer underscores the police’s zero-tolerance approach towards road rage and dangerous driving in Bengaluru. With video evidence increasingly playing a crucial role in investigations, authorities hope the case will serve as a deterrent and encourage safer, more responsible behaviour on the city’s congested roads.
