Motorists in Bengaluru continue to commit serious traffic violations, with road safety breaches making up 74% of the 20 lakh challans issued by Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) between January and April 2025 — averaging 16,100 violations daily.
Key violations include:
- Not wearing helmets (riders and pillion): Over 9.8 lakh cases
- Not using seatbelts: Around 2.5 lakh
- Jumping traffic signals: Close to 2 lakh, mostly caught via surveillance cameras
This trend has remained consistent over the last three years.
- In 2022, 72% of the 1 crore violations were safety-related
- In 2023, 81% of 90 lakh cases
- In 2024, 77% of 80 lakh cases
Additionally, 88% of violations in 2025 so far were caught contactlessly through surveillance systems like the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). The most violations were recorded in areas like JB Nagar, HAL Old Airport, Bellandur, and HSR Layout, known for high vehicle density.
Experts stress that fines alone are insufficient:
- Prof. Ashish Verma (IISc) recommends a penalty points system, revoking licenses on accumulation.
- Dr. Gautham Sukumar (NIMHANS) suggests stronger enforcement, mandatory standard helmet sales, linking insurance renewal with fine clearance, and UPI-linked fine collection.
He also proposes regular surveys, public display of surveillance signage, and drawing from successful enforcement examples like the Bengaluru–Mysuru highway, where fatalities dropped by 40–50%.
