Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday hinted at a major transformation in the city’s administration, revealing plans to split Bengaluru into three separate municipal corporations under the newly established Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA).

This declaration came a day after the state government formally issued orders to revamp the city’s governance structure through the recently passed Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024. Siddaramaiah confirmed that the current civic body, the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike), would be dissolved and replaced by the GBA. He will serve as chairperson of the new authority, with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar acting as his deputy.

“Bengaluru will now be known as Greater Bengaluru. There’s a likelihood of establishing three corporations within the city. A meeting will soon be held to finalize GBA’s structure and areas of responsibility,” the CM stated.

Soon after his announcement, the Urban Development Department issued a notification outlining the initial framework for administrative changes. It clarified that until new civic bodies are formed under the GBA, existing BBMP officials will continue to function under the BBMP Act, 2020.

The move, however, attracted sharp criticism from the BJP, with senior leader R Ashoka sarcastically branding the plan as “Quarter Bengaluru,” accusing the ruling party of fragmenting the city and burdening 110 villages with higher taxes. He alleged that the beneficiaries of this restructure would be a select few landowners.

The city’s administrative future now awaits the detailed execution of the GBA framework.
