A Bengaluru-based health-tech startup is gaining global attention for developing an artificial intelligence-powered platform that could change how brain disorders and mental health conditions are diagnosed and treated.

Founded in 2019 by Laina Emmanuel and Dr Rimjhim Agrawal, BrainSightAI is among the Indian ventures selected to be showcased at Bharat Innovates 2026, an initiative of the Ministry of Education aimed at highlighting research-driven innovations on the global stage.

AI-powered brain mapping technology

At the heart of BrainSightAI’s innovation is VoxelBox, an AI and machine learning-based neuroimaging platform that creates personalised brain maps using resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) scans.

The platform enables radiologists to upload MRI scans and generate detailed three-dimensional brain maps within an hour. These maps provide specialists with insights into the brain’s functional and structural networks, helping improve diagnosis and treatment planning.

The technology is designed to support neurologists, psychiatrists and neurosurgeons in managing conditions such as epilepsy, schizophrenia, depression and traumatic brain injuries.

Helping doctors make better decisions

BrainSightAI positions its technology as a clinical decision-support tool rather than a replacement for medical professionals.

The platform helps doctors understand how different regions of the brain interact, allowing them to make more informed treatment decisions and plan surgeries with greater precision while reducing risks to critical brain functions.

The company also places strong emphasis on patient privacy and personalised care, recognising the emotional challenges often associated with neurological and mental health conditions.

Built on Indian research and innovation

BrainSightAI’s founders bring strong academic and research credentials. While CEO Laina Emmanuel combines healthcare management and business expertise, CTO Dr Rimjhim Agrawal’s research at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) laid the scientific foundation for the platform.

The startup has already secured $5 million in funding and is expanding its focus beyond epilepsy and brain tumour treatment to include conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and major depression.

As India continues to strengthen its research and innovation ecosystem, BrainSightAI is emerging as an example of how homegrown technology can address complex healthcare challenges while attracting international recognition.
