The BBMP is rolling out over 70 “Kasa Kiosks” across the city to tackle the growing menace of blackspots caused by improper waste disposal. Citizens who miss handing over their garbage to pourakarmikas in the morning can now deposit waste at these kiosks, instead of dumping it on roads, drains, or vacant plots.
Background of waste management in Bengaluru
Street-side dustbins were banned two decades ago after the introduction of door-to-door waste collection. Semi-underground dustbins, introduced in 2018, were later removed due to overflow issues. The first Kasa Kiosk was set up at Murugeshpalya in 2018, but expansion plans stalled until now.
Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited CEO Karee Gowda said, “One of the major reasons for blackspots in Bengaluru is that those who miss handing over garbage to pourakarmikas stuff everything in a plastic bag and dump wherever they wish.”
Kiosk deployment strategy
Kiosks will be strategically placed in areas where:
- Garbage collection is poor
- Garbage collection vehicles cannot reach
- Blackspots are frequent
Gowda added that kiosks will be manned in two shifts during the day and closed at night. Work orders for the kiosks were issued two years ago, and officials are now instructed to set them up within three months.
Operational details
Residents can deposit segregated waste throughout the day. The move aims to prevent indiscriminate dumping and reduce overflowing garbage in the city, improving sanitation and public health.
