After successfully rejuvenating 14 dried-up lakes with treated wastewater from sewage treatment plants (STPs), BWSSB now plans to replenish over 30 lakes using treated water from nearby apartment complexes. This initiative aims to combat water scarcity and revive Bengaluru’s water bodies.

Despite apartment complaints about delays in diverting treated water to industries, BWSSB is moving ahead with dedicated pipelines from residential STPs to lakes. Tenders have been issued for Begur Lake (₹1 crore) and Chikkathogur & Yelenahalli-BTM Residency Lakes (₹1.7 crore), sourced from Splendid Lake Breez, Prestige Casabella, and Elite Greenwoods apartments.

BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar emphasized the long-term benefits, stating, “Replenishing lakes will recharge groundwater and restore Bengaluru’s ecosystem.” The Mahadevapura zone, facing severe groundwater depletion, will see 16 lakes refilled.

Most apartments reuse 50% of their treated water, but the lack of storage forces them to release the rest into drains. BWSSB will monitor water quality daily and handle all pipeline work, ensuring smooth execution.

The Bangalore Apartments’ Federation (BAF) has pledged full support, with President Vikram Rai advocating for permanent infrastructure to enable a sustainable year-round solution. With 500-600 MLD of treated water available daily, experts believe this initiative could reshape urban water conservation.
