Following repeated complaints from residents over unbearable stench, health concerns, and increasing fly infestations near garbage dumping sites, Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) has decided to spray specific enzymes and chemicals around major landfill zones in the city.

The initiative aims to control foul odour and flies affecting residents living near garbage processing and dumping areas in Yeshwanthpur and Byatarayanapura assembly constituencies.

Areas facing severe waste-related problems

According to officials, areas including Kannahalli, Seegehalli, Lingadheeranahalli, Doddabidarakallu, Bellahalli, Bagaluru, and Byappanahalli have witnessed severe nuisance due to waste accumulation and fly breeding.

A BSWML official said Bengaluru generates more than 6,000 tonnes of garbage daily, with over half comprising wet waste. Due to incomplete waste segregation across the city, a significant quantity of mixed waste continues to be transported to dumping yards.

Rain worsens odour and infestation

Officials explained that rainwater filtering through garbage creates leachate, a contaminated liquid that attracts flies and spreads foul smell across nearby areas. Residents reportedly face strong odour and hygiene issues within a radius of nearly 5 km around some dumping sites.

To tackle the issue, BSWML plans to spray enzymes and chemicals both inside landfill areas and up to 2 km around them.

Tenders floated for mitigation projects

BSWML has invited tenders for fly and odour control measures. A project management consultancy for Byatarayanapura has been proposed for 11 months at a cost of ₹64.84 lakh.

In Yeshwanthpur, the agency has floated a tender worth ₹56 crore for fly infestation mitigation, public health protection, and infrastructure development around villages located near five waste processing plants.
