Bengaluru‘s notorious traffic congestion has once again come under the spotlight after a startup founder’s candid remarks about her daily commute resonated with thousands on social media.
Dipika Jaikishan, a Bengaluru-based entrepreneur, shared on X that a 4-km drive in the city took her 35 minutes, translating to an average speed of just 7 kmph — roughly the pace of a jogger.
“4 km drive in Bangalore took me 35 minutes today. That’s an average speed of roughly 7 kmph. Not a typo. That’s jogging speed,” she wrote.
Founder questions city’s acceptance of traffic
While the traffic itself was not surprising, Jaikishan said what fascinated her was how residents appeared to have normalised the situation.
In her post, she observed that Bengaluru residents routinely plan their schedules around congestion, often leaving home significantly earlier to compensate for delays.
Drawing a comparison with Mumbai, she remarked that while people often speak about the “spirit of Mumbai”, Bengaluru’s spirit seemed more like “Stockholm syndrome” — a comment that quickly went viral and triggered widespread discussion.
Social media users share mixed reactions
Many users agreed with her assessment, sharing their own experiences of long commutes and daily frustration on the city’s roads.
One user pointed out that even walking or jogging is often not a practical alternative because of inadequate pedestrian infrastructure, including damaged footpaths, parked vehicles and ongoing construction activity.
Others defended Bengaluru, arguing that despite its traffic challenges, the city continues to attract residents because of its pleasant climate, thriving food scene, parks, culture and employment opportunities.
Several users also compared Bengaluru’s congestion with that of other metropolitan cities, with some claiming that traffic conditions in Mumbai can be equally challenging or even worse.
Traffic remains Bengaluru’s biggest challenge
As the city continues to expand, traffic congestion remains one of the most frequently discussed civic issues among residents. Viral conversations such as this reflect growing concerns over urban mobility and the need for long-term infrastructure solutions.
While opinions differ on how Bengaluru compares with other cities, one thing remains clear — traffic continues to be a daily reality that residents cannot ignore. #BengaluruTraffic #TrafficCongestion #StartupFounder #UrbanMobility #ViralPost #newskarnataka
