On November 8, Bengaluru inaugurated its first digital population clock at the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), providing real-time population data for Karnataka and India. The installation, developed in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), aims to raise awareness about population growth’s impact and provide valuable demographic insights for researchers and policymakers.

Key Features:

  • Location: Positioned at ISEC’s entrance for public engagement.
  • Real-Time Updates: Karnataka’s population refreshes every 1 minute and 10 seconds, India’s every 2 seconds.
  • Data Calculations: Includes birth/death rates, migration patterns, life expectancy, and fertility/mortality rates.
  • Census Data Workstation: Provides access to census data and analytical tools for detailed population studies.

Collaboration and Objectives:

This initiative is part of MoHFW’s national project to install population clocks at 18 Population Research Centres (PRCs) across India, emphasizing sustainable development awareness and demographic research support.

PRC Contributions:

PRCs conduct population studies, assist in policy development, and provide technical support, particularly in family planning and health programs.
