Bengaluru: The Pulakeshinagar Police on Saturday arrested a 36-year-old woman for posting a misleading video on Facebook, which was captioned as showing a “rowdy menace in Bengaluru.” The video, however, reportedly depicted an incident that occurred in Uttar Pradesh two years ago, misleading social media users.

FIR and police action

The action followed a complaint filed by police sub-inspector Manoj Kumar, which led to the registration of an FIR under Section 353(1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, pertaining to statements conducing to public mischief.

Police investigations traced the accused, identified as Shahjahan, to Konanakunte, where she was subsequently arrested. After completing due formalities, she was released on station bail.

Social media misinformation concerns

Authorities highlighted that sharing misleading videos on social media can create unnecessary panic and unrest among the public. Police officials stressed the need for verifying content before sharing, especially when posts pertain to law and order incidents in the city.

Experts note that with the proliferation of social media platforms like Facebook, X, and Instagram, misleading content can spread rapidly, impacting public perception and sometimes leading to unwarranted communal or civic tensions.

Legal provisions and consequences

Under Section 353(1)(b) of the BNS, 2023, individuals found making statements that may cause public mischief or alarm can face legal action. Such provisions aim to maintain law and order and discourage the spread of false information.

Police have warned citizens that sharing unverified content online can lead to FIRs, arrests, and legal proceedings, reinforcing the importance of digital responsibility.

Conclusion

The arrest of Shahjahan underscores the growing scrutiny over social media posts in Bengaluru and across India. Authorities continue to urge the public to verify facts before posting or sharing content online, as misleading information can have far-reaching consequences for individuals and the community.
