Sushma Iyengar, a Bengaluru resident, sparked controversy by criticizing BigBasket for including free marigold flowers in her grocery order during the Onam festival. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Iyengar questioned why BigBasket was pushing the celebration of Onam, a major festival in Kerala, when she did not observe it. Known for supporting the pro-Kannada movement, she argued that the company should extend similar gestures for local festivals like Varamahalakshmi or Deepavali.

Her post has since gathered over 4 lakh views and triggered a polarized discussion. While some sympathized with her concerns about cultural promotion, others criticized her for turning a simple gesture of goodwill into an issue. Many pointed out that BigBasket regularly offers free gifts during various festivals, including Diwali and Holi, and viewed the flowers as a harmless token.

Several respondents expressed confusion over why anyone would object to free flowers. One user wrote, “They’re literally giving away free flowers, and you found a problem with even that,” while others suggested focusing on more meaningful issues.
