Bengaluru: In a deeply distressing incident, a 26-year-old woman allegedly killed her two young children and attempted to end her own life following a domestic dispute in Mathikere, under the jurisdiction of the Yeshwanthpur Police Station.
The deceased children have been identified as Nirmal (4) and Nived (1.5 years). The woman, Pavithra, survived the suicide attempt and is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital.
Children allegedly poisoned with milk
According to police, the incident occurred late on Saturday night at the family’s rented residence in Gokulam First Stage, Mathikere. Pavithra, a homemaker, allegedly mixed rat poison in milk and fed it to her two children before consuming the same herself.
Her husband, Prashanth, who works as a sales executive at a mobile phone shop, had reportedly left the house after a heated argument between the couple earlier that night.
The couple, originally from Pavagada in Tumakuru district, had been married for five years and were living in Bengaluru with their children.
Husband discovers family unconscious
Police said Prashanth returned home late at night and slept in the drawing room, unaware of the incident. On Sunday morning, he found his wife and children unconscious inside the room.
With the help of neighbours, he rushed them to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared both children brought dead. Pavithra was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), where she continues to receive treatment.
Frequent quarrels suspected as trigger
Preliminary investigations suggest that the couple had been experiencing frequent quarrels over trivial issues in recent months. Police believe that ongoing domestic discord may have contributed to the tragic incident, though the exact reason is yet to be established.
Officials stated that Pavithra was reportedly distressed following the argument on Saturday night, which may have led her to take the extreme step.
Case registered, investigation underway
Based on a complaint filed by Prashanth, the Yeshwanthpur police have registered a murder case against Pavithra. Authorities are continuing their investigation and are expected to record her statement once her condition stabilises.
Police are also speaking to neighbours and family members to gather more details about the couple’s relationship and the circumstances leading up to the incident.
Concern over mental health and domestic stress
The incident has once again highlighted the serious impact of unresolved domestic conflicts and emotional distress. Experts often stress the importance of seeking timely support and intervention in situations involving prolonged disputes and mental strain.
While the investigation is ongoing, the case has raised concerns about the need for greater awareness around mental health and conflict resolution within families.
Conclusion: A tragic loss under investigation
The deaths of two young children in such circumstances have left the local community in shock. As authorities continue to probe the case, the focus remains on understanding the factors that led to the incident and ensuring accountability.
The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of unresolved conflict and emotional distress within households.
