A woman in Bengaluru has approached police alleging that a luxury Rado wristwatch worth ₹1.8 lakh and a sweater belonging to her deceased father went missing while he was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city.
The Govindarajanagar Police Station has registered an FIR and initiated an investigation into the matter.
Daughter says items carried emotional value
According to the complaint filed by Anita Ramaiah, her father K. Ramaiah collapsed on January 15 following severe health complications.
She stated that her father was wearing the Rado wristwatch and a half-sleeve sweater when the family rushed him for treatment.
After initially approaching one hospital, the family reportedly shifted him to Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi, where doctors later declared him dead.
Anita alleged that the watch and sweater were found missing after his death.
In an emotional video statement, she said the issue was not about the monetary value of the watch but the emotional connection attached to her father’s belongings.
“I am just hoping that I get back my dad’s wristwatch. It is not about the cost, it is about the memories,” she said.
FIR registered after delay allegations
The family alleged there was a delay in officially registering the FIR despite earlier complaints to the police.
According to Anita, she later received a message claiming the complaint had been closed, after which she approached hospital authorities requesting an internal enquiry and CCTV footage.
She claimed the hospital later informed her that the relevant CCTV footage was unavailable.
Police have registered a case against unknown persons under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Fortis Hospital issues statement
In an official statement, Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi expressed condolences to the family and said it had fully cooperated with authorities.
The hospital stated that no complaint regarding missing valuables was raised at the time the body was handed over on January 15, and formal communication regarding the missing items was received more than two months later on April 24.
According to the hospital, CCTV footage was unavailable due to its standard 30-day data retention policy.
The hospital also noted that the patient had reportedly visited another healthcare facility before being brought to Fortis Hospital.
