Bengaluru: In a shocking incident of domestic violence, a 35-year-old woman was allegedly set ablaze by her live-in partner, leading to her death. The victim, identified as Vanajakshi, succumbed to severe burn injuries despite being rushed to a private hospital.
The relationship and background
According to the police, the accused, Vithal, a cab driver and habitual alcoholic, had been married three times earlier. Vanajakshi too had been married twice before entering into a live-in relationship with him nearly four years ago.
Investigators said that due to repeated harassment over Vithal’s drinking habits, Vanajakshi had recently distanced herself from him. She had also developed a close friendship with another man, Mariappa, who is a member of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike.
The day of the crime
On Sunday, Vanajakshi was returning from a temple along with Mariappa and a driver when the incident occurred. Police said Vithal had followed their vehicle.
At a traffic signal, he intercepted the car and poured petrol inside. Petrol splashed onto Vanajakshi, Mariappa, and the driver. While Mariappa and the driver managed to escape, Vithal chased Vanajakshi, doused her with more petrol, and set her on fire using a lighter.
A passerby who witnessed the horrifying act rushed to help. He used a piece of cloth to extinguish the flames and, with others, shifted her to hospital. In doing so, he sustained minor burns.
Medical condition and death
Doctors said Vanajakshi sustained nearly 60% burn injuries. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed while undergoing treatment. Vithal too suffered minor burn injuries in the process.
Police action
The Bengaluru police arrested Vithal within 24 hours of the crime. Senior police officer Narayana M said:
“This entire issue stemmed from a marital mess. It is unfortunate what happened. We arrested the accused within 24 hours. We also deeply appreciate the efforts of the person who came to her rescue. Despite all attempts to save her, the woman succumbed. Stringent sections have been invoked to ensure the accused pays the price for this heinous crime.”
Conclusion
The incident has once again highlighted the dark realities of domestic violence and live-in relationships turning abusive. Police have promised strict legal action to ensure justice for Vanajakshi, while the act of bravery by the passerby has drawn praise.
