A Bengaluru woman’s viral Instagram video comparing corporate work culture in India and the United States has sparked widespread discussion online about long working hours, burnout, and work-life balance.

Sakshi shared her experience during a recent work trip to the US, saying she was surprised to see an office floor almost empty by late afternoon.

‘I had time to see the sunset’

In the video, Sakshi explained that she reached the office around 9.30 am and noticed that most employees had already left by 4.30 pm.

Feeling influenced by the office environment, she also wrapped up work by 5 pm and realised she still had several hours free in the evening.

She said the experience felt unusual because, in India, her workdays often stretch from morning until late-night meetings.

The Bengaluru professional added that after leaving work early in the US, she had time to go on a hike and watch the sunset — activities she said are difficult to manage during regular workdays in India.

Video triggers online discussion

The clip quickly gained attention on social media, with many professionals agreeing that excessively long working hours have become normalised in several Indian corporate workplaces.

Users commented that leaving office on time is often viewed negatively, while late-night meetings and extended work hours are frequently mistaken for productivity.

Others pointed out that poor work-life balance affects mental health, personal wellbeing, family life, and overall quality of living.

Debate over workplace culture continues

The viral discussion once again highlighted growing conversations around burnout and workplace expectations in India’s corporate sector, especially in technology and service industries.

Several users argued that flexible schedules, healthier meeting culture, and respect for personal time are necessary to improve employee wellbeing.

The post has continued to resonate widely online, particularly among young professionals navigating demanding work environments in major cities like Bengaluru.
