The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has revealed an extensive plan to address Bengaluru’s ongoing traffic issues, with a proposed budget of ₹15,000 crore. The ambitious project, prepared by Altinok Consulting Engineering, aims to develop a 170-km network of tunnels, elevated corridors, and underpasses to improve mobility and ease congestion across the city, according to reports from the Indian Express.
The project includes the construction of 16 elevated corridors and two major tunnels. The 124.7 km of elevated corridors and 46 km of tunnels will cover critical routes such as Yeshwanthpur to KR Puram (27 km) and Hebbal to Silk Board (18 km), significantly reducing travel times. For example, the north-south tunnel from Hebbal to Silk Board is expected to cut the 90-minute commute to just 20 minutes. Additionally, the east-west corridor, a double-decker tunnel stretching 28 km from KR Puram to Nayandahalli, will have three lanes on the lower deck and two on the upper deck, with a construction cost of ₹8,913 crore.
The project promises environmental benefits, including reduced noise pollution and minimal surface disruption due to the use of tunnel boring machines. However, before construction can begin, environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, as well as approvals from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, are required.
The Bengaluru Traffic Police has also launched a redesigned website to enhance traffic management and enforcement services, providing a more user-friendly experience for citizens.
