Bengaluru: Bangalore Blue grapes, a Geographical Identification (GI) tagged variety, are now available year-round due to improved pruning techniques and changing weather patterns. This grape variety, renowned for its deep blue color, is particularly sought after in Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, prompting the state government to regulate its trade.
The variety, named after Bengaluru due to its climatic conditions, thrives best at temperatures around 36-37°C. However, recent temperature spikes in April and May have caused color changes in the grapes, affecting their market value. Farmers are now seeking expert advice to maintain the grapes’ signature color.
According to SV Hittalmani, a retired horticulture expert, Bangalore Blue grapes are predominantly used for juice production, with 95% of the crop allocated for this purpose. The crop’s demand has notably increased in recent years, with a 5% annual rise in production and sales, as reported by Somu T, Managing Director of the Karnataka Wine Board. The grapes are also sent to distilleries in Maharashtra.
KB Dundi, Additional Director of Horticulture (Fruits), mentioned that while the market remains unorganized, efforts are underway to strengthen farmers’ produce organizations to reduce reliance on middlemen. Bangalore Blue grapes are primarily grown in Bengaluru Urban and Rural, Devanahalli, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, and Sidlaghatta. Farmers are increasingly shifting from mango cultivation to grapes due to rising demand and the crop’s suitability for juice production.
