Bengaluru: Long before Bengaluru earned its reputation as India’s technology capital, one ice cream parlour had already become a favourite destination for residents seeking sweet treats and memorable evenings. Lakeview Milk Bar, established in 1930, remains one of the city’s oldest and most cherished culinary landmarks.
Over nearly a century, the iconic establishment has evolved from a modest ice cream shop into a popular café and bakery, while preserving its rich heritage.
A journey that began in British India
According to the parlour’s official history, Lakeview Milk Bar was founded in 1930 by James Meadow Charles, an Englishman living in British India. The shop initially served just three classic ice cream flavours—vanilla, chocolate and strawberry.
As India moved towards Independence, Charles returned to England and handed over the business to 19-year-old entrepreneur Vrajlal Jamnadas.
Determined to elevate the brand, Jamnadas travelled to California to learn the art of ice cream making from industry experts. On returning to India, he introduced several new flavours that quickly became popular among Bengaluru residents, helping the parlour build a loyal customer base.
Becoming a Bengaluru landmark
In the early 1970s, Lakeview Milk Bar opened its now-famous outlet on MG Road, placing itself at the heart of Bengaluru’s bustling social life.
The parlour soon became synonymous with the city’s vibrant drive-in culture, attracting nearly 700 customers every day. It emerged as a favourite late-night destination where families, friends and young couples gathered to enjoy ice cream and spend quality time together.
Its enduring popularity has made it one of Bengaluru’s most recognisable food destinations across generations.
More than just an ice cream parlour
Lakeview Milk Bar expanded its offerings in 1980 by introducing Continental-style breakfasts and freshly prepared savoury snacks.
During the early 1990s, it further diversified its menu with freshly baked cakes, cookies and pastries.
Today, visitors can choose from a wide range of desserts and baked delicacies, including cakes, tarts, quiches, pound cakes and artisan breads, reflecting the establishment’s transformation into a full-fledged café and bakery.
Nearly 95 years after opening its doors, Lakeview Milk Bar continues to stand as a symbol of Bengaluru’s culinary heritage, serving generations of customers while preserving the nostalgia that has made it an enduring city icon
