Bengaluru: A transformative facelift is on the way for one of Bengaluru’s most congested stretches: the 22-kilometre corridor of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) from Silk Board Junction to Baiyappanahalli. Under the direction of Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Ltd (B.Smile), the upgrade aims to elevate this arterial road to international urban mobility standards.
BBMP commits ₹400 crore for ORR revamp
A key highlight of the recent BBMP budget was the allocation of ₹400 crore toward this mega-infrastructure overhaul. The amount is earmarked for a portion of the project, with B.Smile designated as the implementing agency overseeing all stages — from technical design to on-ground execution.
The project is expected to redefine urban commuting by integrating smart and sustainable solutions, especially for public and non-motorised transport.
What’s coming: Features planned for the ORR corridor
As per initial plans, the upgrade will include:
-
Dedicated bus lanes for improved BMTC efficiency
One-way traffic systems to streamline vehicle movement
Pedestrian skywalks for safe road crossings
Non-motorised transport paths to promote walking and cycling
Upgraded bus shelters and signage for better commuter experience
Grade separators to ease bottlenecks and ensure smoother traffic flow
These features are intended not only to reduce congestion but also to prioritise public transport and pedestrian safety, long-standing concerns on the ORR stretch.
Objective: Easing congestion and boosting connectivity
The Silk Board–Baiyappanahalli stretch is among the city’s most economically vital and overburdened corridors, connecting key tech parks and residential hubs. With lakhs of commuters using it daily, traffic snarls and delays have become routine.
B.Smile’s initiative will look to reverse that trend by:
-
Enhancing multi-modal connectivity
Integrating smart traffic management systems
Reducing travel time for buses and private vehicles
Improving safety, accessibility, and commuter comfort
What’s next: Timeline and blueprint
A private consultancy will soon be hired to finalise the technical and design aspects of the project. According to B.Smile, a detailed blueprint outlining exact features and construction phases is expected to be completed within 2–3 months of appointment.
A model for Bengaluru’s smart future
Urban planners believe this could be a blueprint for future road infrastructure in Bengaluru, aligning with sustainable and people-centric development goals. The ORR upgrade is also expected to boost BBMP’s reputation for embracing global best practices in urban mobility.
