Eighteen-year-old Ashitha SK, who undergoes regular dialysis, once struggled to balance studies, hospital visits, and daily routines. She often found herself late for everything, including medical appointments and leisure activities, due to Bengaluru’s notorious traffic. However, her life has now transformed. “With nocturnal dialysis, I no longer stress about delays or wasting precious daytime hours. I want to experience everything in life, despite my health,” says the Bellandur resident.
Traffic congestion has long made hospital visits exhausting for dialysis patients. But a growing number—nearly 10% in Bengaluru—have embraced overnight dialysis, allowing them to undergo treatment while they sleep. Dr. Deepak Kumar Chitralli, chief nephrologist at Manipal Hospital, explains, “Unlike standard four-hour daytime sessions, nocturnal dialysis lasts six to seven hours overnight, offering a gentler process and freeing up daytime schedules.”
Dr. Raghavendra N from Trilife Hospital highlights the convenience, especially for students and working professionals. “Overnight dialysis ensures patients wake up refreshed and ready to go about their day. Plus, with better toxin removal, they enjoy a more flexible diet.”
Beyond time-saving benefits, medical experts note improved overall health. Dr. Manjunath S of Fortis Hospital states, “Nocturnal dialysis reduces complications, eases stress, and enhances mental and cardiac health.”
Patients like businessman Mothiram, 74, and entrepreneur Shailendra Kumar, 67, find their energy levels significantly better, enjoying smoother routines and more quality time with family.
