The weekend’s sudden downpour wreaked havoc on Bengaluru’s roads, leaving key routes submerged and traffic snarled. Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) identified major waterlogging hotspots, including stretches along Outer Ring Road, Airport Road, Marathahalli, Hebbal, and Bannerghatta Road.
“Even 10mm of rain brings the city to a standstill, with traffic jams stretching 5-6 km,” a BTP official stated. The Panathur railway underpass remains a critical choke point, frequently turning impassable during rains.
A ground report by DH revealed deteriorating roads, broken sidewalks, and potholes exacerbating post-rain misery. In Mahalakshmi Layout, ongoing roadwork by BBMP and BMRCL has choked traffic. JC Road has been reduced to a hazard zone with multiple projects running simultaneously, resulting in frequent accidents. “At least one crash occurs here daily,” said Nagraj from BS Power Company.
In RT Nagar, pedestrians struggle due to missing footpath slabs. “It’s scary to walk here,” a street vendor lamented. Meanwhile, businesses on Kumbargundi Road have been battling open drains for months, with rainwater flooding shops and damaging goods.
Frustrated citizens took to social media to share their plight. One resident of HSR Layout recounted tripping on an exposed rod in a footpath hole, sustaining injuries that required a tetanus shot. With no immediate relief in sight, Bengalureans brace for more urban nightmares this monsoon.
