Following widespread criticism over the recent metro fare hike, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced a reassessment of its revised pricing structure.
The fare increase, effective from February 9, triggered strong discontent among daily commuters, with many reporting steep hikes on specific routes. BMRCL acknowledged the backlash and assured that ridership data and commuter grievances would be reviewed to address any unfair discrepancies.
“We have received numerous complaints regarding unexpected fare jumps on certain travel stages. A thorough analysis will be conducted to ensure the pricing adjustments remain reasonable,” a senior BMRCL official told The Hindu.
Amid the controversy, the Karnataka Chief Minister’s office released a statement countering allegations by the Opposition. The government dismissed BJP’s claims that the state was solely responsible for the fare hike, accusing them of spreading misinformation for political gain.
The statement emphasized that BMRCL operates as an autonomous entity under a 50-50 partnership between the Karnataka and Central governments. Officials clarified that fare decisions are governed by the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002, and not solely dictated by the state.
With public dissatisfaction mounting, all eyes are now on BMRCL’s next move as commuters demand a fair resolution.
