In a major push towards women’s empowerment, the Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Karnataka (AWAKE) will distribute over 80 commercial driving licenses to women drivers in Bengaluru on November 28. This initiative marks a significant step in challenging gender norms within the transportation sector.
According to AWAKE President Asha N.R., the demand for women drivers is on the rise, especially among female passengers who feel safer traveling at night. The organization’s training programs not only help secure jobs with taxi services but also equip women to launch businesses such as tour agencies, service centers, and car washes.
Through a collaboration with a local driving school, over 60 women have already been trained, with many now working for services like GoPink, Bengaluru’s all-women taxi network.
Looking ahead, AWAKE is spearheading a groundbreaking regional driving training center for women in Bidadi. Backed by a ₹10-crore investment from the Karnataka government and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this first-of-its-kind facility will include automated tracks, accommodations, and advanced training resources for women across India.
Currently, only 30 women hold commercial driving roles in Bengaluru, highlighting the need for initiatives like these to meet the growing demand. With these efforts, AWAKE is helping women drive towards independence and a thriving future in a traditionally male-dominated field.
