Dysfunctional streetlights at the Zuzuvadi-Attibele border on the Krishnagiri-Bengaluru National Highway (NH) have cast a shadow over the safety of police officers stationed at the prohibition check post. This check post, located on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka state border, is crucial for intercepting vehicles carrying prohibited liquor, which is punishable under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act.
A police officer shared that the team regularly inspects around 100 vehicles during the day and around 80 at night. On weekends, the number of checks can even double. However, five streetlights near the check post have been non-functional for over six months, making it difficult to carry out inspections during nighttime.
Another officer recalled a tragic incident during the Covid-19 period, where a traffic police officer from Hosur, working at the inter-state border, lost his life in an accident caused by a container lorry driving recklessly in the dark.
When the issue was raised with a district officer, he confirmed that the problem would be brought up with the District Collector, C. Dinesh Kumar. Ramesh, the NHAI Krishnagiri project director, also assured that the matter would be looked into promptly.
