A Bengaluru-based cardiologist has reignited the city’s long-standing debate over its cultural core versus its fast-developing outskirts — this time, in defence of Whitefield.

Dr Deepak Krishnamurthy, a respected cardiologist and active user on X (formerly Twitter), recently weighed in on the frequent online trolling that Whitefield and eastern Bengaluru neighborhoods face for being “too far” from the older, culture-rich hubs of Jayanagar, Basavanagudi, and Malleswaram.

In his post, Dr Krishnamurthy — a Whitefield resident since 2004 — described the area as independent, modern, and entirely livable, saying, “The number of times I need to leave Whitefield in a month is almost zero. Whitefield is a city by itself.”

He highlighted the area’s self-sufficiency, noting its robust infrastructure including schools, hospitals, nightlife, malls, restaurants, and access to Metro and Volvo bus services.

“People who think it’s too far… don’t need to come. For the rest, everything is available here,” he added, subtly challenging the outdated view that real Bengaluru only exists in its southern quarters.

The post quickly gained traction, drawing both support and disagreement from netizens, some of whom echoed the sentiment while others insisted Bengaluru’s essence lies in its heritage-rich older neighborhoods.

The conversation adds a new layer to the city’s evolving identity crisis, as residents of newer localities seek validation and equal representation in Bengaluru’s urban narrative.
