A disturbing incident unfolded outside a Bengaluru park where a couple was verbally abused and physically attacked by a group of men, police confirmed on Friday. The confrontation, which was caught on video, occurred while the pair were seated on a scooter, facing one another.
In the clip, the man—clad in an orange tee—and the woman—dressed in a burqa—were seen engaging in a tense back-and-forth with the group. One of the men was seen filming the woman without her consent. The group questioned the woman about whether her family was aware of her whereabouts and challenged the man for socializing with someone from a different religion.
At one point, the men began intimidating the woman, questioning her morals for sitting beside a man while wearing a burqa. The incident quickly escalated, with another video showing the mob encircling the man and allegedly beating him with a stick-like object.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Girish, stated that the authorities had received a formal complaint from the woman. “The couple was seated outside the park when they were confronted. A case has been filed, and the investigation is in progress,” he said.
Based on the complaint, five individuals—including a minor—were apprehended. Officials confirmed that further details will emerge during questioning.
Reacting to the incident, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge emphasized that moral policing has no place in the state, adding, “This is Karnataka, not Bihar or UP. We are a forward-thinking state.”
