Bengaluru is witnessing a surge in gastrointestinal (GI) and influenza cases, with doctors attributing the spike to weather changes and unhygienic food practices. City physicians caution against consuming food from unclean sources and emphasize the importance of maintaining body temperature to prevent infections.

Dr. Kamal Bhalla, a consultant in internal medicine at Sagar Hospital, Kumaraswamy Layout, reports treating approximately 50 influenza cases weekly in her outpatient department — a fivefold rise compared to the previous month. “Sudden temperature fluctuations contribute significantly to viral illnesses. Unlike mild cold and cough, the flu often presents with severe body pain and extreme weakness, making it difficult for patients to carry out daily activities. Some even experience loose motions, although it’s not a definitive flu symptom,” she explained.

Young adults in their 20s and 30s, due to frequent outdoor exposure, account for a large proportion of flu cases. Meanwhile, elderly individuals and those with underlying conditions like diabetes or smoking-related lung damage are at higher risk of complications such as pneumonia. Dr. Bhalla recommends flu shots to reduce the severity and frequency of infections, especially for vulnerable groups.

GI infections have also spiked, with weekly cases rising from two to 14. These infections, caused by both bacterial and viral agents, often result from consuming contaminated food or water. Symptoms include fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea.

Doctors urge Bengaluru residents to adopt preventive measures, including avoiding uncooked or street food, staying hydrated, and ensuring proper hygiene.
