The Rajarajeshwari Nagar Police have registered a case against a domestic worker accused of stealing Rs 25 lakh from a house in Jnanabharathi Layout.

According to police, the case was registered on April 7 after a resident filed a complaint regarding the disappearance of a large sum of cash from his home. The complainant told police that he had received the money after selling a plot two years ago and had kept it in a wardrobe in his bedroom.

Theft uncovered through CCTV footage

Police said the wardrobe key was usually stored in a drawer near the television stand. When the cash went missing, the complainant initially checked with his wife and mother to determine whether they had used or moved the money.

After learning that neither was aware of the missing amount, he reviewed footage from the home’s CCTV cameras. The footage allegedly showed the family’s domestic worker taking cash in small amounts over different periods.

The woman had reportedly been employed by the family for the past 13 years.

Cash recovered during police search

Acting on the complaint, police traced the accused woman’s residence and conducted a search. During the visit, officers found only her daughter at home.

According to police, the daughter informed them that her mother was involved in the theft. A search of the premises led to the recovery of Rs 15 lakh in cash.

Efforts on to trace accused

Police said efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the domestic worker. Further investigation is continuing to determine the full extent of the theft and recover the remaining amount.

The incident serves as a reminder for households to ensure the safe storage of valuables and maintain vigilance, even in long-standing employment relationships
