The city police on Friday arrested a domestic worker for allegedly stealing 12.5 kg of silver articles valued at approximately ₹35 lakh from her employer’s residence.

The accused, identified as Chaitra, a native of Davanagere, had been working for nearly one-and-a-half years at the house of a reputed surgeon employed at a private hospital in the city, according to officials from the Jeevan Bheemanagar Police Station.

Theft carried out in phases

Police said the silver utensils and pooja articles were stored on the upper floor of the residence and were used only during festivals and special occasions.

Investigators revealed that the accused allegedly removed one item at a time over several months, ensuring that the theft did not attract immediate attention. “She took advantage of her access to the house and ensured the items went missing gradually,” an officer stated.

As the silverware was not part of daily use, the family reportedly did not notice the missing articles immediately.

Case registered, probe continues

Upon realising the disappearance of several items, the family approached the police, who initiated an investigation. Based on suspicion and inquiry, Chaitra was taken into custody for questioning.

Police are currently verifying whether the stolen articles were sold and are making efforts to recover the remaining property. Further investigation is underway to determine if anyone else was involved.

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of vigilance and periodic checks of valuables kept at home, especially items used seasonally.
