A tempo traveller rammed into the undercarriage of a grounded IndiGo A320 aircraft at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on Saturday afternoon, after the driver allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel.
The incident took place around 12:15 PM on the airside near parking bay 71 Alpha. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Sources confirmed the aircraft has been non-operational since 2022 due to engine trouble and had been classified as Aircraft on Ground (AOG).
The tempo traveller belonged to Globe Ground India, a ground handling company. It was being used to ferry Akasa Air crew between their office and aircraft locations. “The driver was alone in the vehicle when he nodded off and collided with the stationary aircraft,” said a source.
The mishap has prompted an official investigation, with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) being informed.
A spokesperson for BIAL (Bangalore International Airport Ltd) stated: “Necessary safety protocols were immediately followed. We are coordinating with all concerned agencies to ensure thorough investigation.”
IndiGo Airlines also acknowledged the incident, saying they are cooperating fully and that appropriate action will follow based on the findings.
The incident, though without casualties, raises concerns about fatigue management and operational safety within ground handling services.
