In a disturbing incident highlighting rising concerns over drug abuse among youths, two individuals allegedly assaulted an auto-rickshaw driver, robbed him of his vehicle and mobile phone, and attempted to flee the city. The Bagalur Police have arrested both accused, including a minor.

Escape from rehabilitation centre triggers crime

According to police, the accused were undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation centre in Electronic City after struggling with drug addiction. Frustrated due to lack of access to substances, they allegedly planned their escape. Before fleeing, they reportedly stole the mobile phone of the centre’s owner.

Rapido ride booked using stolen phone

Using the stolen phone, the duo booked an auto via Rapido from the Huskur area. They instructed the unsuspecting driver to take them to the KIADB Industrial area in Jalahalli, posing as regular passengers.

Brutal assault and robbery at destination

Upon reaching the destination, when the driver demanded payment, the accused allegedly turned violent. The minor is said to have attacked the driver brutally, knocking out four of his teeth. Fearing for his life, the driver fled the scene, while the accused escaped with the auto and mobile phone.

Attempt to pawn stolen vehicle

The accused reportedly drove the stolen vehicle to Malur, where they fabricated a story about a family emergency to pawn the auto for cash. Investigations later revealed that they returned to Bengaluru and continued moving around the city.

Swift police action leads to arrest

Following a complaint by the injured driver, police launched an investigation. Despite attempts by the accused to evade tracking by switching the stolen phone on only when needed, authorities traced their movements and arrested them.

One of the accused has been identified as Kanish, while the other is a minor. Police stated that substance abuse appears to be the primary motive behind the crime.

Growing concern over youth drug abuse

The incident has once again brought attention to the link between drug addiction and rising violent crimes involving youths in Bengaluru. Authorities have stressed the need for stronger intervention, awareness, and rehabilitation support systems.
