Bengaluru: In a major development in the high-profile Bitcoin case, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday conducted simultaneous raids at multiple locations in Karnataka, targeting key accused and their associates.
The searches were carried out against Srikrishna Ramesh alias Sriki, the prime accused in the case, along with the residences of Mohammed Haris Nalapad and Omar Farook Nalapad, sons of Congress MLA N. A. Harris.
Raids linked to money laundering probe
According to ED sources, the action is part of an ongoing investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA). The agency has alleged that the Nalapad brothers are close associates of Sriki and among the main beneficiaries of proceeds of crime linked to the case.
Officials said the raids are being conducted across 12 locations in the state as part of efforts to trace financial transactions and assets connected to the alleged незаконные activities.
Background of the Bitcoin case
The investigation stems from multiple FIRs and chargesheets filed by Karnataka Police, which accuse Sriki and his associates of a range of cyber and financial crimes.
These include hacking national and international websites, stealing cryptocurrencies such as bitcoins, extortion, and alleged violations of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The case has attracted widespread attention due to its complex nature involving digital assets and cross-border cyber activities.
Modus operandi revealed
ED sources outlined the alleged modus operandi followed by the accused. Investigators claim that the group engaged in hacking websites and cryptocurrency wallets to steal virtual digital assets (VDAs), which were treated as proceeds of crime.
The stolen assets were then reportedly sold through crypto trading platforms, with the funds routed through various channels. The process involved layering transactions through multiple bank accounts to conceal the origin of the money before being used for personal gains.
Officials said this multi-layered approach made tracking the الأموال challenging and required detailed forensic and financial analysis.
Focus on financial trail
The current raids are aimed at uncovering further evidence related to the financial trail and identifying additional beneficiaries. Investigators are examining documents, electronic devices, and transaction records seized during the searches.
Sources indicated that the agency is also probing whether the proceeds of crime were invested in assets or routed through shell entities.
Political and legal implications
The involvement of individuals linked to a sitting MLA has added a political dimension to the case. However, officials clarified that the investigation is focused strictly on financial irregularities and alleged criminal activities.
Further action will depend on the evidence gathered during the ongoing searches and subsequent analysis.
Conclusion
The ED’s coordinated raids mark a significant step in the ongoing Bitcoin case investigation. As authorities continue to track the flow of illicit funds and examine digital evidence, the case is expected to unfold further, potentially leading to more disclosures and legal action.
