BENGALURU: Picture taking a relaxed Sunday walk and suddenly spotting your favorite singer performing live on the street—only to witness the act getting abruptly shut down. That’s exactly what unfolded when Ed Sheeran staged an impromptu show on Church Street during his India tour, embodying a true ‘Peak Bengaluru’ experience.

As fans gathered in excitement, police intervened and disconnected the microphone, citing a lack of authorization and obstruction of the footpath. As officers attempted to escort him away, Sheeran addressed the crowd, stating, “We were allowed to be here, but this officer is shutting it down. See you later!”

Ed Sheeran kicked off his song at 11:51 AM, but within a minute, authorities pulled the plug. The Cubbon Park police denied that any approval had been granted. When contacted, Sheeran’s management remained unresponsive.

Later, Sheeran took to Instagram, clarifying, “We had permission to busk, which is why we performed in that exact location. It wasn’t a random appearance.” However, local police asserted that no formal request had been made and that street performances are prohibited due to public inconvenience.

Sanjay Kumar, head of the Church Street and Rest House Association, backed the police, stating that even overseas, such acts require authorization. He suggested Sheeran’s team could have sought a private venue instead.

Fans, however, expressed outrage, calling it an unnecessary move in a city celebrated for its dynamic music scene.
