A tragic incident came to light in north Bengaluru after an elderly couple was found dead inside their apartment in Chokkanahalli on Tuesday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Sheo Nandan Prasad (85) and his wife, Sumitra Devi. Originally from Bihar, the couple had been living with their son, Kiran Kumar Kashyap, a retired airman currently working as a senior security supervisor at a private college in Bengaluru.

Son discovers parents’ bodies

According to the complaint filed by Kashyap, his wife and son had travelled to Bihar for a family wedding, while he remained in Bengaluru with his daughter and elderly parents.

On Monday night, the couple retired to their bedroom after having dinner. The following morning, Kashyap prepared breakfast and went to check on them around 6 am. When repeated calls went unanswered, he broke open the locked bedroom door with a hammer.

Inside, he found both his parents unresponsive. His daughter immediately informed the police.

Health challenges faced by the couple

Police said Sheo Nandan Prasad had been suffering from heart-related ailments, while Sumitra Devi was completely blind and hearing impaired.

Based on preliminary findings and the complaint, investigators suspect the elderly woman may have been killed before the man died by suicide. However, officials stressed that the exact cause of death will be determined only after forensic and post-mortem examinations are completed.

Investigation underway

An investigating officer said the deaths are believed to have occurred sometime between Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

Police have registered a murder case and launched a detailed investigation. The post-mortem report is expected to reveal the precise cause of Sumitra Devi’s death and help establish the sequence of events.

The incident has left neighbours and residents of the apartment complex shocked, highlighting the emotional and caregiving challenges often faced by elderly families dealing with serious health conditions.
