A 23-year-old engineering student was found dead in his hostel room in Tumakuru on Monday night, leaving behind a note that indicated emotional distress linked to family matters.

The deceased has been identified as GE Venkatesh, a third-semester engineering student at SIT College and a native of Davanagere.

Student found in hostel room

According to police, Venkatesh was staying at the BCM Hostel in Upparahalli. He was found dead inside his room on Monday night, following which hostel authorities alerted the police.

A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Note recovered during investigation

Police said they recovered a note believed to have been written by Venkatesh and addressed to his family.

According to investigators, the note expressed his wish to see family members living together harmoniously, suggesting that he had been deeply affected by certain family-related concerns.

“It appears he was upset over some family issues,” a senior police officer said, adding that further inquiries are being conducted.

Mental health support remains crucial

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of emotional well-being among students, many of whom face personal, academic and social pressures while pursuing higher education away from home.

Mental health experts emphasise the need for open communication, timely support and access to counselling services for students experiencing emotional distress.

Police have urged family members, friends and educational institutions to remain attentive to signs of emotional struggles and encourage those in need to seek help.

If you or someone you know is struggling emotionally or having thoughts of self-harm, help is available.
