Bengaluru: The downfall of K.A. Murthy, a 27-year-old software engineer from Shivamogga, highlights the devastating consequences of online betting addiction. Once employed with a reputed tech firm in Bengaluru and drawing a decent income, Murthy’s life took a dark turn due to compulsive betting.

Initially dabbling in online gambling for fun, Murthy soon found himself trapped in debt. His father, Annapa, had to part with their ancestral land in Shivamogga just to bail him out financially.

Even after shifting to Bengaluru with hopes of turning over a new leaf, Murthy remained ensnared by his vice. He lost motivation to work, constantly seeking shortcuts to make money. When his salary couldn’t support his habit, he turned to crime.

Murthy began preying on women wearing jewellery, particularly around temples. In one incident, he snatched a gold chain from a woman at Angala Parameshwari Temple and fled. Magadi Road police later arrested him.

During interrogation, he confessed to several thefts in Konanakunte, Avalahalli, and Sadduguntarapalya. Authorities recovered 245 grams of stolen gold, worth approximately ₹17 lakh.

Once a source of pride, Murthy’s actions have now left his family heartbroken. His addiction not only shattered their trust but plunged them into emotional and financial turmoil.

Police have expressed alarm over the spike in youth gambling online. They urge families to stay vigilant, offer support, and discourage involvement in harmful online gaming that leads to personal and social ruin.
