Kannada film actress Ranya Rao, daughter of Karnataka DGP (Police Housing Corporation) K Ramachandra Rao, was taken into custody at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for allegedly trafficking 14kg of gold bars and 800 grams of jewelry.
Authorities had been monitoring her movements due to her repeated, brief visits to Gulf nations. Based on her travel patterns, officials intercepted her late Monday night. Upon searching, they uncovered gold cleverly hidden inside a belt strapped to her body.
Investigators suspect she exploited security protocol gaps by utilizing VIP services intended for high-ranking officials. A designated airport officer reportedly facilitated her smooth exit, ensuring she bypassed standard security screenings. She was then escorted away in a government vehicle, evading scrutiny.
DRI is now examining surveillance footage of her past arrivals to determine if she had smuggled gold during earlier trips. Reports suggest she followed the same pattern over her last four journeys, wearing identical outfits to keep the concealed belt unnoticed.
Reacting to the arrest, DGP Ramachandra Rao distanced himself from his daughter, asserting that she had not been in touch since her wedding. He emphasized that the law would take its due course.
The shocking revelation has sparked concerns over lax airport security and misuse of bureaucratic privileges, raising questions about wider smuggling networks.
